"Name that Book" contest (Update - contest over)

It's a universal rule that sequels suck, but all generalities are false (including this one). I present to you the sequel to my first novel, Into the Fifth World. The story is complete but a proper title has yet to emerge out of the chaos.

Send me a message anytime Saturday, April 21st, to enter the contest to "Name that Book". First acceptable title submission wins a free signed copy and will be listed in the acknowledgements. You may connect over email or Twitter @palamping. Read more on the Characters page.

Below is a synopsis.

The story of Cyrus, brother of Proteus.
Into the Fifth World presented the story of Proteus, a scientist who bounces about as a pawn of secret societies struggling in vain against the machinery built by their own utopian delusions and lack of creativity. Proteus finally embraces the path the universe wills for him, fulfills the prophetic visions of an ancient Hopi nation seeking the final catalyst to emerge into a new mindset of life, all in time to keep his own life preserved, but damaged.
The follow up story explores the path of Cyrus, a man compelled to retrace his elusive brother's steps and reunite his family. Cyrus immediately becomes a tool of several planning cabals. He uses their own mechanisms against them, making progressive gains until he finally discovers the one unseen force behind all the disparate groups, the one exploiting human doubts, superstitions and fears, the one directing global strife and anarchy leading up to the 2012 hysteria.
Cyrus skillfully navigates the globe, from Doctors Without Borders camps in South America to the vast research labs at CERN to the simple villages in the Tibetan Himalayas. Cyrus chases the clues and finds himself more and more like Proteus. He, too, must submit to the will of the universe and endanger his family to stop a global catastrophe engineered by a would-be leader and his legion of like-minded lackeys.
Readers will read the tale of Cyrus to see if the Fifth World will begin on a strong foundation or whether humanity will divide itself and prepare the way for a conquering. They will experience ways to begin to solve the ailments of mind, body and soul in this fast-paced follow-up.

Fate has Spoken!

"Fate" has spoken!

"Revelations of Fate" is my new book title!

The word Revelations has a biblical context plus a prophecy/foreshadowing feel to it.  Quite fitting with the entanglement that emerge out of the story.

Some people confuse the word Fate with Destiny, but destiny is more personal whereas Fate is brought about by a universal will.  In Norse mythology, the Norns or "Fates" were 3 sisters who wove a thread of life from individual strangs.  They decided the length of life, the events therein and the method of death.

I couldn't think of a title more fitting the themes of my book.

Thanks everyone for participating!

Contest Update!

In response to all the feedback, greatly appreciated, I begrudgingly have to disqualify the entry "Destiny's Harmony."  I liked it but it reminded too many people of a romance novel.  "Destiny's Harmonic" sounds better but still isn't quite appropriate for this book.

But thanks to the harmony of destiny, I received a late entry in the contest that satisfactorily replaced the controversial entry.  That title is:

 Revelations of Fate

(I also think Fate's Revelations is acceptable, but the one who suggested it prefers the 1st one).

So the contest (to be decided by Saturday, 3 weeks after the contest started) is between these 2:

 Revelations of Fate

and

Viral Entanglement

And I reserve the right to slap on "2012" somewhere in the subtitle just to ride on the coattails of all the 2012 hype.

Blowback

I'm getting a lot of blowback on the "Destiny's Harmony" especially from ladies who say it reminds them too much of a "Chic Lit" title.  I honestly never thought of it that way.

But I guess "Destiny" could be interpreted as a female's name and Harmony would therefore be some kind of state of eros.

Me and my scientific mind never considered it to be anything than Destiny = Fate and Harmony = Being In Tune with the Vibrations of the Universe.

But that summarizes why picking a title is so dang difficult.  You try to be succinct, but that opens up the possibility of a title that is vague and has multiple meanings.

Which is one of the reasons why I was pursuing DESTINY'S HARMONIC / DESTINIES HARMONIC / DESTINY HARMONIC but just couldn't settle on one.

Ya, "Destiny's Harmonic" sounds more acceptable in that light.

Time to Choose
After a week and a half of reviewing about 2 dozen entries, it comes down to 2.  The wheat has been separated from the chaff.  (hold on -- there's no slang word called 'chaff' that is a derogatory word for some ethnic group, right? Quick Yahoo search ... No?  OK, we're good).

The cream has risen to the top (hold on, is it OK to use the word 'cream'? The lawyers tell me No. OK, jurors, disregard that idiom).

The "feral" pigs of this contest have been segregated out of the non-feral population and "destroyed."  (Is it OK to use 'segregated'? Only when talking about pigs?  And/Or police officers? OK).

The lawyers tell me to steer clear of all analogies, puns and metaphors.

OK, so there's 2 final entries in my "Name that Book" contest:

2012: Viral Entanglement

and

Destiny's Harmony

Feel free to send your feedback.  This is not a vote.  It's about quality, not quantity.  One good argument can defeat a hundred lousy ones.

If your entry in the contest wasn't picked, don't fret.  Picking book titles is quite a subjective process.  Many valid entries were rejected for inexplicable reasons.  Just be glad you participated, but I'm not sending you a participation trophy.

"TBD" means I don't like the other titles and I'll pick one on my own. It's had a strong showing so far, but can it survive the last hurdle? Actually, "To Be Determined" would be a good name for a book. As would "The Last Hurdle."

I also reserve the right to add a subtitle (did I forget to mention that?).

Jason M Waltz

Apr-30 10:34pm

TO BE DETERMINED does have merit :)rnrnI'm thinking LOST IN THE FIFTH WORLD pulled some strings or something, cuz no way was that winning over THE CHAOS VACCINE back in the Elite 8! The fix is in!

Cyrus

May-1 9:06pm

The "To Be Determined" entry is 'Cyrus to the Rescue' right?

Proteus

May-1 9:18pm

No, Cyrus, you were merely a passenger on the rollercoaster that I designed (and Destiny was the constuction materials). The TBD title is 2012: Viral Entanglements.

Jason M Waltz

May-1 9:28pm

"Viral Entanglements" does have a ring to it. I understand the marketing angle to using the '2012' but that bit sort of clangs for me. May the bestest title win!

Proteus

May-1 10:01pm

Hey, Lost in the Fifth World had some positive qualities. In any case, neither of them would have defeated Destiny's Harmony in the semi-finals.rnrnSure, there's some degree of a "fix" going on here, but it's my contest so what are you going to do?

I still can't decide.  To make it easier, I'm starting a playoff system.  A Sweet 16.  But I only have 14 entries, so I will add 2 more and call them "To Be Determined".

Here are the match-ups (randomly chosen to introduce Destiny into the equation).

OK, you can have any that I don't use. I'm partial to the 3rd one.

I like that too, though I was really trying to get DESTINY HARMONIC to work (I like 'harmonic') but it just doesn't sound right in the ears.

More suggestions

Late entries continue to trickle in, therefore the contest will continue for the next few days.  I had a minor head cold Saturday night and had to rest.  I did receive these suggestions:

  • use the world 'Destiny' in the title
  • 'Paradigm Shift
  • Into the Fifth World ... The Chase

And someone suggested the title end with the words Twenty Twelve, such as:

  • Compelled: Twenty Twelve
  • Damaged: Twenty Twelve
  • Catastrophe: Twenty Twelve

No clear victor yet.  Some of these are catchy titles that could be used for other projects, like a video game.
