Higgs Boson update

http://news.yahoo.com/scientists-unveil-milestone-higgs-boson-hunt-044513533.html

It’s a boson!

So says the LHC, announcing they have found the long sought particle, the so-called “God” particle.

Scientists at Europe’s CERN research center have found a new subatomic particle, a basic building block of the universe, which appears to be the boson imagined and named half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs.

If you read Revelations of Fate, you would not be surprised.  As is foretold on page 70, scientist Jacobson tells my brother Cyrus,

“If the universe will allow it, we should just march on and we’ll find our particle.”

The context of the quote was about how to proceed after a perceived sabotage that could in fact be caused by properties of the Universe.

The book was published about 30 days before the big announcement.  So, checking the scoreboard,

Fate: 1

Meaninglessness: 0

Also foretold on page 181, Mithras saying, “Colliders … structures built only for the purpose of finding a reason to build another collider.”

Which is corroborated by this statement in the same article posted above:

“The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

From my writings to God’s ears…

Contest update!

In response to all the feedback, greatly appreciated, I begrudgingly have to disqualify the entry “Destiny’s Harmony.”  I liked it but it reminded too many people of a romance novel.  ”Destiny’s Harmonic” sounds better but still isn’t quite appropriate for this book.

But thanks to the harmony of destiny, I received a late entry in the contest that satisfactorily replaced the controversial entry.  That title is:

 Revelations of Fate

(I also think Fate’s Revelations is acceptable, but the one who suggested it prefers the 1st one).

So the contest (to be decided by Saturday, 3 weeks after the contest started) is between these 2:

 Revelations of Fate

and

Viral Entanglement

And I reserve the right to slap on “2012″ somewhere in the subtitle just to ride on the coattails of all the 2012 hype.

Top 2

Posted: 2nd May 2012 by Proteus in Contest

After a week and a half of reviewing about 2 dozen entries, it comes down to 2.  The wheat has been separated from the chaff.  (hold on — there’s no slang word called ‘chaff’ that is a derogatory word for some ethnic group, right? Quick Yahoo search … No?  OK, we’re good).

The cream has risen to the top (hold on, is it OK to use the word ‘cream’? The lawyers tell me No. OK, jurors, disregard that idiom).

The “feral” pigs of this contest have been segregated out of the non-feral population and “destroyed.”  (Is it OK to use ‘segregated’? Only when talking about pigs?  And/Or police officers? OK).

The lawyers tell me to steer clear of all analogies, puns and metaphors.

OK, so there’s 2 final entries in my “Name that Book” contest:

2012: Viral Entanglement

and

Destiny’s Harmony

Feel free to send your feedback.  This is not a vote.  It’s about quality, not quantity.  One good argument can defeat a hundred lousy ones.

If your entry in the contest wasn’t picked, don’t fret.  Picking book titles is quite a subjective process.  Many valid entries were rejected for inexplicable reasons.  Just be glad you participated, but I’m not sending you a participation trophy.

2 Entries so far in Name that Book contest

Posted: 21st April 2012 by Proteus in Contest

We have one simply called “12/21/2012″ and one called “Into the Fifth World: The Cyrus Chronicles.”

Name that book contest – starting April 21

Posted: 14th April 2012 by Proteus in Contest

If you can help me decide the name of my new book, I’ll send you a free autographed copy.

On April 21, I will post a synopsis of the book, which is the sequel to Into the Fifth World.  Then I’ll set up multiple ways to communicate with me — Yahoo IM, Twitter, this blog, Skype, etc.   Post a message if you have a favorite.  First one to send me a really plausible idea for the book title wins.

The book will be self-published on CreateSpace and Amazon just as soon as I create the cover art.
